I recently got the Naxos 4 CD Complete Peter Cornelius Lieder from jpc (bargain at 2.99 Euro). Niche repertoire maybe but a very enjoyable voyage of discovery. Unusually for a 19th Cent composer he sets mainly his own texts.

My most recent Naxos purchase was Debussy Martrydom of St Sebastian with Jan Pascal Tortelier and the excellent Ulster Orchestra.

There is a appears to be a Debussy Martrydom of St Sebastian on Naxos by the LyonO with Markl and a load of Debussy by Tortelier on Chandos but I cannot see the Martyrdom amongst them!

From quite a long list of NAXOS CDs in my possesion, the following are particular favourites:

1) Douglas Lilburn - Symphonies, Orchestral Works & Chamber Music
NZ Symphony O, Judd & NZ String Qt - 3 Separate CDs.

These excellent CDs represent Lilburn's first period of composition - before his regrettable decision (IMO) to change to electroacoustic music.

2) George Butterworth - Songs from a Shropshire Lad, Folk Songs from Sussex
Roderick Williams, Iain Burnside.

A wonderful CD - particularly the Housman settings.

Since you are into these things Jayne, have you ever compared the Hi-Res downloads with the exact same Naxos CD? The Dutilleux CDs seem to be available in regular CD format, plus also in FLAC at higher sampling rate and bit depth, but roughly the same price - just a tad more.

Though as you are a Qobuz enthusiast, you may not do either CD or downloads any more, so just use the Qobuz version.

I am not convinced yet about Qobuz Hi Res - but am warming to the idea very slowly. Cost is a consideration as well as quality.

hmm..not at home so I can't check but I am probably in error...I have the Tortelier discs that you referenced so I must have lumped this in with that...at any rate, it's a good disc!

Both the 24/96 download/stream of No.2 and the Q-Studio stream of No.1 (which was released later) sound excellent, the engineering aptly a little closer for Le Double...
Both are outstanding readings of very beautiful music easily comparable with earlier releases from Morlot, Hans Graf, P-Järvi etc...possibly finer still.

I did't buy the CD of either, but Naxos don't usually disappoint in their SQ now, in whatever medium...

There's a good bit more of Roddy Williams & Iain Burnside on Naxos. Seek out their two discs of Finzi and their Britten (inc. Songs & Sonnets of Wm. Blake) . I may have others but those jump to mind!

I have the Williams/Burnside recording - as you say, it's wonderful!
The relative cheapness of Naxos CDs has also encouraged me over the years to investigate a range of works by British composers such as Alwyn, Bax, Bliss, Howells and Moeran and American composers including Barber and Schuman.

Same experience, here. Walter Piston - American composer well-worth investigating - if you haven't already done so.
