Guess its rather like R3 pre Wright compared to today's Americanised junk offerings

      Well, yes, really

He says: "Unless you're going to break world records for sleep deprivation, no one will actually hear everything Schubert wrote this week. But you are almost certain to hear a song, a symphony, a choral work you hadn't heard before."

With a bit more day-to-day effort from Radio 3 that could be true anyway
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Setting aside the junket (divine with nutmeg) syllabub (equally delicious) and Angel Delight (glorious in the gastronomique wastes of a 1950s childhood) I'm suffering a bad bout of Trailer Rage. IF WE CAN HEAR THE TRAILER, WE'RE TUNED IN ANYWAY AND DON'T NEED ANOTHER GUSHY, BREATHY REMINDER.

What a contrast between Suzy Klein who raved to Ailish Tynan that she had "kick started the whole shebang of the Schubert celebration" followed by the scholarly, measured tones of Tom Service with his slight tendency towards Sewell-style pronunciation.

Despite these irritations, I am still enjoying the Schubert...

If his remark to SK is anything to go by, it won't be long before he starts insisting on being introduced as "Doctor Tom Service" .

Beginning to wonder if - though it will never be uttered aloud of course - the R3 teams begin to think they have painted themselves into one monstrous corner on this one.

Schubert is most deffo NOT Mozart, and wall-to-wall-to-wall Schubert is .........not all that interesting. They are working manically to make it seem like 'an event', but the harder they work, they more I wonder if they ever dare to stop for a second, they might just find themselves uncomfortably thinking 'this is a mistake' before rushing on with the next trail and tweet-fest.

No doubt the listening figures will be massaged to paint a rosy picture ("over a 3 minute span we had out highest ever reach...; at 3:15 am we had 40% of listeners over the age of 65,etc").

I'm inclined to agree with you DM. FOT, there isn't the sheer variety - you've really, I mean really, got to like song. After about five lieder, I struggle to cope with any more until I've had a good dose of symphonic music. BTW, has anybody heard any of the symphonies or overtures yet? I've scanned the schedules and all I can see is lieder, follow my lieder everywhere.

Now, Liszt, there would have been an idea. The piano transcriptions alone, could have kept R3 going for a month.

My objection is that I don't want to become over-familar with/bored by Schubert's greatest pieces. That's happened to me once - his Octet - and I don't want to consign another great piece to yawn corner, thank you

"Instant dessert for little angels" - ideal for FoR3 Forum boardsters

And for those tempted to complain that this is all off-topic, well last time I switched R3 on briefly, Service was cramming his gob full of apple strudel, so desserts seem to be an essential element of Schubertian discussion....

                              Back on track with Schubert.
I'm not proud to admit to this, but if I have to listen to another Schubert Sonata D.960 I'll
Been listening to D.958 this afternoon: loved the Uchida, but couldn't believe my ears listening to Kempf. Was he overdosed on tranquilizers? Still got Brendel, Serkin, Tirimo and Richter to listen to. Not forgetting Kovacevich. Missed the BAL but probably still on BBCiPlayer.

DracoM, AFAIK this view isn't carved in stone by any great god! Personally I find minor (usually = early) Schubert generally far more interesting than minor, early Mozart.

But chacun a son gout (sorry, still can't do accents), so could you manage to be a tad less pontifical in your pronouncements please?
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!
