I really don’t see what the actual problem is .I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Anyway, to be a bit more positive, I am very interested, ( questions about musical labels put to one side for now) in the non -classical musical interests and enthusiasms of people whose great knowledge of and expertise in Classical I really respect.
And the places where we meet ( Richard Barrett and I share an enthusiasm for the Raincoats, for example) are always productive, and enjoyable.
Further, the opportunity for people to share their depths of knowledge ( Gurnemanz on Lieder, Josef K on Jazz guitar as just two of very many possible examples) is surely positive for all concerned, and happens better in a open- house environment ?I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. I'm slightly baffled over this. No one is suggesting (I don't think) that the forum should be closed to the discussion of particular kinds of music. But it does seem to be an identical issue as with Radio 3. "I'm interested in all kinds of music, I want to hear it broadcast on the radio, and I want it to be broadcast on Radio 3 because that's the music station I listen to." Similarly, "I like all sorts os music and value being able to discuss it on the forum; and I want it to be discussed on the Classical Forum because that's the one I read." Yet the forum does have "self-declared musical ghettoes" for jazz and world music (as Radio 3 jazz and world programmes are largely 'ghettoes'). It's the argument that 'categorisation' can be a convenience: it enables people to find what they want more easily (they may also want to shut out what they don't want - a preference derided by those who don't make distinctions).
It would be easy enough to set up a general 'unclassified' music category but, if I remember, the idea was shot down a few years back.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

…and back to the Mark Knopfler discussion I particularly liked the Dire Straits ‘Love over Gold’ , his duet with James Taylor on ‘Saling to Philadelphia’ and his album with Emmylou Harris. I would say that his music in the main is well-played easy listening and maybe a ‘modern muzak’! OK I’ll return my tongue from my cheek nowLast edited by cloughie; 13-01-23, 09:14.

I don't think about Dire Straits or its frontman from one year to the next. I find that music bland to the point of being completely ignorable if I ever encounter it. Life is too short for easy listening.
