I'm sure this thread will be relocated by a moderator should a Talking About Muzak forum ever come about.

Fair enough if those who contribute to the thread feel this way. Occasions when I contribute, usually to bring forthcoming programmes to people's attention, rarely prompt replies.

SA - I disagree entirely with Teamsaint and agree entirely with you . I cannot abide Dire Straits but lots of people evidently love them judging by their album sales but a classical music section is surely not the place to discuss their work - what next ? Madonna,Black Lace , the Birdie Song ?

Please find a place elsewhere for the discussion of popular music - administrators /mods /hosts etc,

‘Popular music is the classical music of NOW’

              (Paul McCartney - in1968!)

The Proms nowadays features rock/pop/soul music, so does Radio 3 - so why not here?

I thought inclusivity was what we all want ? Its certainly the R3 way.

It might be a good idea or a terrible idea. It does however reflect a 'terrible' reality, just as Radio 3, the BBC's 'classical music station' includes most kinds of music under the sun, so [Category] classical forum does likewise. Jazz and world music programmes, with no more than occasional 'latitude', broadcast respectively jazz and world music, and thus have separate board forums; whereas classical programmes include … if you get the general idea. Only classical must, in this respect, be inclusive

On the other side of the coin members more interested in popular music might find it easier to look for those threads in a dedicated forum .

'Popular' music seems to have become so fragmented as to make all kinds 'niche', though some niches are, admittedly, roomier than others. Most enthusiasts seem to object to their favourite genres of music being designated 'popular'. So it's a talking point but also a bit of a can of worms - in my view .

I found this thread instructive - even though I might not have looked at it under a heading of Muzak or Popular. If there are only a few posts polluting the classical music purity surely it's no big deal!

....yes Dave , but, under which category do I post about playing tunes on my shirt buttons (a dying art now everybody wears T shirts)....mostly it's just popular stuff , but sometimes it veers into Bach or Medieval street music....

Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

Just out of interest I googled "BBC radio" Mark Knopfler. Seems as if Radio 2 is his usual home.

However, having made my point ad nauseam [sic], I will withdraw to allow discussion of Mark Knopfler and his musical legacy to resume.
