    Mark Knopfler

Just listening to his golden heart cd, I seem to like all his music, is he in your collection ?
Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

He is knopfler me personally - nor was Dire Straits, though I've been in a few.

Is there a riff in your genes?

If there is, it must indeed be a ter-riff-ic one!

(Actually there does happen to be a rip in my other jeans, which I've just cottoned onto!)

I have a complete set of Dire Straits albums, plus a few of Knopfler's solo efforts, including Golden Heart and Shangri La.

I enjoy it all, but MK does make the same album repeatedly, doesn't he?

First time I saw Dire Straits was on this show with the Police also appearing in Feb 1979. May have been their first TV appearance.

Other than a few nice tunes, I have to say that they are not for me.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

No but I’m delighted to have found (thanks to this thread) a video on YouTube of a gig by his Notting Hillbillies at Ronnie Scott’s which I was at. Not at all my usual fare but it was one of the most exhilarating live events I’ve been to. For example, go to 1:59:00 here:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

However, the really important question, Nick, is, would you have gone to Ronnie's for some real jazz???

Yes! I used to go quite a bit in the ‘90s

It did seem a bit like that until he started doing more solo work, writing what he likes instead of for the market seems better.

We have a world music and jazz forum - should we not also have a popular music forum for threads like this ?. Mr Knopfler whether you like his music or not surely is not at home in a classicial forum ? or open a sub forum in Platform 3 ?

                        Glad you enjoyed it live.

Quite: I've always felt that the Experimental etc forum is too broad a church for what it tries to contain.

Seems a good idea to me but it’s a step which is ‘above my pay grade’ I think - one for EA…

There are lots of threads about a wide variety of music in this sub forum, including pop/rock/ jazz.( 700+ pages ,going strong, and covering a huge variety of music).

It isn’t hard to avoid those threads you don’t have an interest in.
I thought inclusivity was what we all want ? Its certainly the R3 way.
