I can't vouch for its outstandingness in other respects, though; nor, tbh, can I remember why I bought it.

For me, Charles Panzera and Pierre Bernac were the classic singers of Duparc's melodies. Its' a pity Panzera didn't have a better pianist; she really isn't up to the climax of 'Phidyle'. Bernac of course fared better. I think overall, I think Poulenc's piano playing was hios best side, rather than his own music.

Bernac is fabulous - it’s just a shame he didn’t record more! That’s new for me so thanks for mentioning it, Smittims. Panzera has such a special voice, I like everything I’ve ever heard from him..

I hadn’t come across Le Roux - but unfortunately it’s not streaming anywhere as far as I can see.

The marvellous Maggie Teyte EMI Références twofer of French song can still be snapped up quite cheaply second-hand - as I did several years ago.

I love Charles Panzéra on his EMI Références disc with 12 Duparc songs. He's accompanied in 1936 recordings by his wife Magdaleine Baillot.

Another recent acquisition is the very recommendable Duparc disc from Andrea Mastroni and Mattia Ometto on Brilliant Classics. Unusual for a bass to record these songs - he plays Sarastro on stage. Janet Baker made a lovely record of some of the orchestral songs with LSO /Previn in the late 1970s coupled with the Chausson Poeme de l'Amour et la Mer .

There is also a lovely Hyperion disc in which the songs are shared between Thomas Allen and Sarah Walker.
