There should be a starring role for the greatest and most underrated composer the UK has to offer…

The genius that is George Lloyd!

(And why is that hack Andrew Lloyd - Webber being included? Surely his dreck gets enough exposure?!)

I presume the music at all the coronations has centred on institutional exceptions of the time rather than the personal tastes of each monarch.

However we know quite a bit about the King's tastes which are probably more interesting than his mother's:

The musical tastes of King Charles III are more sophisticated than those of our late Queen. That’s not being rude: it’s just a fact. Her favourite musician appears to have been George Formby, whose chirpy songs she knew by heart. No doubt she relished their double entendres – but the hint of smut meant that,

What a terrible selection of composers for the new commissions (with the exception of Judith Weir) - another reason I’m glad to be out of the country. Is there a single decent composer amongst them ?

Shirley Thompson is an extremely decent composer. Otherwise, who cares really, it's just some background noise deemed appropriate for the usual fake pageantry, we do this kind of thing so well don't we, "the King’s long standing and deeply held relationship and affiliation with Wales" my a**e.

Yes didn’t have the full list so didn’t see her name on it. Are there any Welsh composers on it ?

I think the most significant point was the BBC headline, telling us that there were 12 new compositions, but the only one they mentioned was by AL-W.

The saddest thing is that the Coronation is one of the occasions when more listeners and viewers from outside Britain , many of whoim may never come here, look in to see what we're up to. When they hear these composers' offerings will they sigh or laugh up their sleeves and say 'There, didn't we say it was 'The Land Without Music?'

                    Karl Jenkins was mentioned somewhere…

(Secretly I would’ve liked to have been invited to compose a Coronation March to follow in the tradition of Elgar 1911 and Walton 1937/1953).

Apologies for the accidental closure of this thread earlier this afternoon. And thank you to those who alerted me to it.

Oh, I thought it had become too contentious and the shutdown was damage limitation!
Perhaps I'll add my somewhat uncharitable thought after all...

I understand a lot of folk seem to think he writes music.

So would I, would likely only take me a 2-3 weeks to write it fully scored, welcome to ask me if the commissioned one (whatever it is), isn't llikely to be ready in time. Don't think I'll be watching/listening to the Coronation, the thought of hearing even a few seconds of ALW, Nigel Hess or Wiseman is just too terrifying a prospect.
