    Arise, Sir Stephen Hough

… predictably ignored by the BBC News coverage.

(cf: Jubilee celebration concerts, is there anything non-pop/rock in any of them?)

    Still, a to Sir Stephen!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh hooray and thanks for this news, Nick.

I learned from him in person how to easily, swiftly and accurately slit the shrinkwrapping on a CD. Not many people can say that.

This is absolutely marvellous news. How thoroughly well deserved. Bravo!

He said his honour “implied acknowledgment that classical music is something of continuing relevance and importance in British cultural life”.

Arlene Foster though, heavens above, it gets worse every year, or is it that worse people rise to prominence...

As I mentioned some time ago on the thread about Sir Tony Blair, it's very much a dubious honour in any case.

Sadly, it is now too late for Sir Simon Preston; an unfortunate lacuna at the pinnacle of the organ world. (cf. Dame Gillian Weir, DBE 1996)

Still, when you see who Nobel Peace Prizes get doled out to, sometimes . . .

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

serious question, though showing how out of touch I am (no tv) - who is she and for what has she been honoured ?

I realise it seems like a long time ago but don't you remember when Theresa May was prime minister???

Hyacinth Bucket (which, the joke runs, she insisted everybody should pronounce “Bouquet”), was a comedy programme called Keeping up Appearances. Mrs Bucket was played by Patricia Routledge.

The photos above do look like her.

I believe she was honoured for "services to theatre and charity".
