    Mozart Violin Concertos

Have these ever been on a BAL ? I cannot remember any and can see no sign in our lists of them .

I love the Perlman/VPO/Levine - a bit romantic and full fat but what fabulous playing from Perlman and the VPO.

Menuhin rather more lemony in tone but very musical his mono recordings of 4 and 5 with Pritchard and the Philharmonia are even better - K218 is very moving .

Mutter /Karajan when she was 15 in K216 & 219 . More recently, Frang with Arcangelo and Mullova have been excellent Historically informed but not complete sets.

Other favourites Grumiaux,Julia Fischer , more full fat from Oistrakh and HIPP wise Huggett/OAE.

    Off-the-top-of-the-head......

    Faust/Antonini, Zehetmair/Bruggen, Frang/Cohen, Znaider/LSO….
It was the Pamela Frank/ZTO/Zinman Arte Nova set in 2000 that really placed them in my heart……

I often play these concertos as an aubade, with the K364….(just this very day, the Zehetmair…this latter, best when Bruggen has the baton in 2,3 and K364......)….

Too many good ones to list!

That is a stunning set; fairly recent discovery for me. I also find Zukerman and the St.Paul Chamber Orchestra set satisfyingly invigorating. As you say "Too many good ones [sets] to list"

I started with 3 and 5 with Menuhin on HMV Concert Classics. Then 2 and 4 with Mutter on EMI.

I also started on Concert Classics but with D Oistrakh and the Philharmonia which was coupled with Gilels/Ludwig playing Beethoven PC4 - a strange coupling but superb playing on both sides of the LP.

            I must dig that Gilels/Ludwig out .

Been enjoying getting reacquainted with Monica Huggett’s performances on Virgin Classics with the OAE.

Yes, the Beethoven is very special indeed and the Mozart's good too although a bit dated in the big band approach. As a great Oistrakh fan, I always love his playing and his earlier (1950s) Mozart is very stylish. Recent recordings such as the Faust and Frang that Jayne referred to have a totally different take on the music, times have changed.

I'm not sure about Perlman, listening to the G major, it sounds stodgy from the opening tutti compared with Oistrakh/Philharmonia. Interestingly Heifetz still sounds more modern too although, of course, he only played and recorded the last 2 concertos. For a modern, big band comparison try Mutter, she and the LPO are very light on their feet.

Any thoughts on the recent Drego/Norrington recording?

Yes, I like the Huggett set, which also gives you a Rondo and an Adagio - with Simon Standage/Hogwood you get 2 Rondos and the Adagio as well. But there's no doubt in my mind that the Huggett set is the better one, and going new for just over a fiver on Amazon at the moment, a terrific bargain.

Yes shame her Sinfonia Concertante and Concertone with Pavel Beznosiuk only a download and no second hand copies to be seen.

I always feel disappointed when a set of the Mozart Concertos doesn’t include the Sinfonia Concertante. One of my all time favourite works.

Yes pg and there are some beautiful recordings around - Brandis Cappone / Bohm, Stern Zukerman / Barenboim, Loveday Shingles / Marriner and Oistrakh D & I / Kondrashin are some of my ‘old school’ staples.

Thanks vinteuil for directing me to where I could find a copy . The Huggett/Besnosiuk Sinfonia Concertante K 364 is very beautiful and perfect music for a sunny winter’s morning.

There is also a nice HIP Sinfonia Concertante K364 with Roger and Stephanie Chase and the Hanover Band, issued long ago on Cala. Sadly it only seems to be available to download now.
