Just announced on the Lebrecht Slipped Disc site that the great Brazilian pianist has died.

Very sad news. It sounds as if his last couple of years were unhappy.

Very sad news. It sounds as if his last couple of years were unhappy.


RIP, Maestro.

He seems to have spent a good deal of career on the continent, as a trove of recordings were released a few years ago from concerts with German Radio Orchestras

Very sad news. We saw him in Leipzig at the Gewandhaus with Chailly in Brahms 1st PC in 2006. Recording became an award-winning CD.

I’ve long enjoyed Nelson Freire’s recording of Rachmaninoff’s Suite No.2 Op.17 for two pianos with Martha Argerich (1982, Philips), which they can be seen playing together in Tokyo in 2003. Their evident enjoyment of Rachmaninoff’s glowing melodies and more virtuosic moments is apparent.
