There is a cheap Original jackets Record of her recordings with Klemperer on Warner . It contains her terrific Wesendonck Lieder , the Liebestod, Leonore’s big number from Fidelio that I cannot remember how to spell and some Mahler including the three most important Ruckert Lieder - wonderful singing.

The Klemperer one. I thought that was supposed the be the classic. Actually, to be honest, it’s Wunderlich’s contribution that I go back to...

No. The Fricsay is the only recording I have of that
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

By adherents of the Klemperer cult I suppose... CL's recording of the Lied with Karajan, quite apart from the voices, contains some of the most exquisite orchestral playing I've ever heard.

Which can’t be said of the Israel PO with Bernstein but I feel Ludwig is at her best there. Anyone know her live account with Lewis and Reiner in Chicago in 1958 ?

No, but now learning of its existence, I have just ordered a "Used - Very Good" copy on CD.

I think that recording was filmed with , at one point , Lenny expressing his frustration at this sublime singer being unable to keep up with his ridiculously fast tempo. Whatever his merits as a conductor sympathy for, and understanding of , singers and their needs was not one of them.

The recording seems to make Lewis seem further away than Ludwig but despite the odd cough is perfectly serviceable.

Ludwig is in absolutely gorgeous voice - Reiner’s conducting whilst cooler than Walter and especially Lenny is very fine and supports his singers.

Highly recommended especially for the late Christa. Also very lovely oboe playing in the finale.

                            The latter.

I do not have the legendary recording of Duke Bluebeard’s Castle so have ordered that today.
