Very sad news. I may only have seen her once, but she appears on countless recordings on my shelves.

        RIP Christa Ludwig

I only saw her once too, hamming it up wonderfully in Candide with Bernstein on the podium in the Barbican...

To be honest I don’t have many recordings of her... the classic Lied von der Erde, of course, and above all the EMI Karajan Rosenkavalier

What a phenomenal career and a wonderful woman by all accounts

          RIP

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Sad indeed. This video shows aspects of her performances which I was completely unaware of - https://youtu.be/jWqqsVFXbUE

I have recordings of Candide, and I really enjoy the work - rather silly though it often is - and particularly this one.
I was surprised to see her acting and moving around in this performance.

Otherwise I imagine her in works like Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Fidelio, as well as Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, with Klemperer,
and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with Karajan and didn't think she would show the kind of behaviour which the video demonstrates.

She must have had a sense of fun!

            CL RIP

When Karajan came to record his Ring for DG, it's said that he didn't want anyone in the same role that they had sung in the Solti recording for Decca. The only exception is Christa Ludwig who took the part of the Götterdämmerung Waltraute in both. It's easy to hear why no-one else would do.

What a great voice and person. The first disc I took off the shelf and am just playing was the Mahler Des Knaben Wunderhorn song with her husband, Walter Berry, and Leonard Bernstein on piano.
                  Wagner - Wesendonck-Lieder, Otto Klemperer/Philharmonia
Lieder - Wolf, Schubert and R. Strauss.
                  Schumann Frauenliebe with Gerald Moore
I shall play Das Lied von der Erde, Klemperer again, later - ending poignantly with her "Abschied".

Which classic Das Lied? I think she made at least 3. I am listening to the Karajan at present.

Captivated on Monday morning by the Rose duet from the Karajan recording of Rosenkavalier played in memoriam on Breakfast by Petroc.

Her Mahler Kindertotenlieder with Karajan was my only recording for a few decades and has imprinted me so that when I hear another I always wish I could put her recording on immediately.

Just realised that I have a CD of her Das Lied von der Erde... lined up to spin later today.

EDIT: 'Just realised' - I knew I had this work conducted by Klemperer, and saw other Forumistas mention they were listening to this work conducted by Karajan with Ludwig - it didn't occur to me that she'd recorded it more than once with different conductors.
