While I was at it, I also ordered the Borodin 1-13 on Chandos and the Fitzwilliams on Eloquence. With the Rubio quartet that I already have, it should be enough for now.

Having repeatedly listened to the 8th over the last few weeks, I want to delve further into these works and alternative performances really help with that. I will be listening on the go quite a lot and I prefer DAP to my iPhone, so I need to own hard copy and transfer it.
I have the excellent Pacifica set which I reviewed. I'm in full agreement the Fitzwilliam set is most worthy too.

it's lovely. I bought it after reading the autobiography of Rostislav Dubinsky. It won't win any awards for High Definition sound but the ear quickly adjusts

Thanks Richard. Did you get it on Chandos or the earlier EMI? I understand the Chandos is a big improvement in sound quality.

I've just played through 8 and 9, and the sound on the Chandos re-master is quite forward but very acceptable - there is some background rumble in quiet passages, but nothing really to spoil the overall enjoyment

This and the Eder Quartet in 14 & 15 make a very satisfying cycle IMO.

I actually don’t have any comparator except for a dim memory of previous lp (Melodyia? I can’t remember)incarnations but The above is pretty accurate. It is also perhaps paradoxically a bit recessed and there isn’t much room ambience but as mentioned previously, not a serious impediment to very insightful music making

I've heard good things about the Eder 14/15 on Naxos. I'll give it a whirl at some point

These are indeed, very good, but not only 14 & 15 - others in the set are also well-worth hearing.

Yes, the Eder set is well thought of. It's just that 14 & 15 are often cited as excellent performances.

Why not take five or six performances of no.8 and do a BAL for us?
