Some unfortunate news on Eloy’s Facebook page mind -June

Yes, I don't think his health has been good for many years... but his last FB post was only six days ago so he's still hanging on.

Not long finished listening to Richard Barrett's Blattwerk for cello and electronics - highly recommended!

Two CDs by FURT arrived today: 'sense' and 'equals'. The tribute to Stockhausen from the former, 'curtains' is currently spinning - its timbres tend towards the glitchy synthetic electronic type, though often the ear will catch something like a transformed kind of acoustic instrumental sound. Often there is a splendid, rhythmically frenetic display of uncategorisable sounds. A fair number of times there is localised repetition. Overall (the piece just finished) a worthy tribute to Stockhausen.

At risk of becoming a Richard B tribute thread, but since he flagged it up on facebook, I've decided to give his and Milana Zaric's album Mirage a listen. I find much of it quite meditative in the best possible sense, making one's mind slow down and hone in on the manifold attractive details - which I'm still discovering after many listens.

I'm inclined to agree. Some fascinating sounds being produced, each 'sound byte' being interesting in its own right. I guess I'm parsimonious, but the entire album is available on YouTube, which is good enough for me.

Anyway, it has overriden the Schubert Octet, to which I was listening - Through The Night has been going through a purple patch this week.....

You sure? The video with visuals by Incredible Bob doesn't - as far as I remember - include the binaural 'Sphinx'. Plus the download probably has better sound quality.

Sphinx is on our previous video. But yes, the download does have much better sound quality (better than CD quality in fact). Thanks for listening!

My thanks to Luka T. Zagoričnik for bringing it to mine, via FB. By the way, the (minimum) price for the FLAC download, after VAT is added, is £42.75 GBP if paid via Paypal.

I just listened - through headphones of course - to two cuts from Richard B's album Strange Lines and Distances: Vermilion Sands and eye-blink (1). I am glad to be reminded of how great these pieces are and how especially the latter one is a masterpiece. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I coughed up for the Xenakis electroacoustic works CD boxed set. It came with the download, so now I'm going to dip into it.

Just finished listening to FURT's 'curtains'. Now appropriately, I'm going to follow it up by listening to at least some of this:

I wonder if there are more Xenakis-centenary releases in the pipeline? I certainly hope so. While I own a couple of boxed sets of his music (orchestral works and the Alpha & Omega one) plus a handful of other CDs, I wouldn't mind having more chamber music - or in fact, more orchestral music, since while good, the boxed set conducted by Tamayo isn't comprehensive...

Anyway, I just listened to Hibiki Hana-Ma and was mightily impressed, almost as impressed as I was listening to Bohor when I dipped into the downloads last week. I think Hibiki... almost certainly samples recordings of Xenakis' music for acoustic instruments, and though the liner notes come with the download, I think I'll wait until I receive the CDs in the post to read them from a booklet.
