I thought I'd already had an earful.

Does that mean if I listen again, the quality will diminish, and continue to do so until I pay up? Many other sites only allow short samples so I was surprised that this seemed to be the whole thing.

Now that is one of my favourite electronic pieces of all time (Malec's Lumina for strings and tape, Lied for voices and strings, Luminétudes for tape alone, Dodécameron for vocal ensemble and others are on a similar level). The first movement of Triola had an influence on my way of thinking that's still possible to hear in the most recent output, as I'm sure you would agree.

At the moment I'm reading an interesting book called Electronic Inspirations by Jennifer Iverson, which covers the early history of electronic music focused on the WDR studio in Cologne. It's an area I'm fairly well versed in, having translated the selected writings of Gottfried Michael Koenig who was a central figure in that history, but I still learned quite a lot from it.

Yes indeed. In fact, with the possible exception of some Stockhausen, listening to the first movement of Triola I thought that this is perhaps the first time I'd encountered some electronic music that I could actually relate to your electronic music.

Well the last RB piece at I listened to was Close-up, there's a performance on Vimeo, and that too has contrasting sections like that Malec Symphony (interesting choice of word there, symphony, as if he was out to shock or to reconcile himself with a tradition.) At the risk of embarrassing myself, I'll say that a part of Close up has a sort of timeless quality -- time stops, sort of thing -- and something similar may well happen in parts of the Malec too, the Ombra movement. Thanks for posting the Malec, Joseph K -- it was a pleasure to listen to it. And thanks RB for posting Close up, obvs.

I love it when time stops still!

I'm glad you liked listening to it, but I didn't post it myself - all the concerts that take place in the Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall (part of Leeds University's music department) are live streamed and kept available, which is a very fine service I think. We are hoping to record the piece for a CD before the end of this year, but there's some considerable amount of cash to raise first.

I think the reason Malec subtitles his piece "Symphonie pour moi-même" is as a reference to Schaeffer and Henry's Symphonie pour un homme seul of 1950, the first piece of musique concrète that exceeded the duration and scope of Schaeffer's early studies. But actually the first movement of Triola can be analysed in terms of sonata form, although I'm not sure whether Malec thought of it that way.

                  Very good news!

Here's hoping the cash is found.

Thanks for the info. I listened to his Lumina the other week and was impressed.

Started to explore Keith Rowe’s The Room Extended. It’s four CDs and I’m dipping in fairly randomly, at the moment CD 2, which has some evocative “hautological” episodes - a sampled track of traditional music with all sorts of electronic grunting and groaning over it, really magic for me, that sort of thing. Does anyone know this music?

Squidco sells CDs, DVDs, Vinyl LPs and magazines of unusual music in the fields of improvisation, compositional music, experimental, chamber rock, and Rock In Opposition

I don't think Keith's work has anything to do with sampling - he uses an electric guitar (with some live processing) with various objects surrounding and actuating it, including a radio, which is where the "found sounds" emanate from. Many people prefer his solo work but my favourite Keith Rowe album is Duos for Doris, a duo album with John Tilbury, which for me questioned and reconfigured very many thoughts and ideas about what "playing together" means.

With p&p, the price of the CDs is around double that of the lossless download version via Bandcamp. How extensive are the programme notes that come with the CDs? There is no indication of a pdf with the Bandcamp download.

I don't have any programme notes unfortunately, I have a download.

Thanks for this Richard, I like what I hear of his, and I'm very keen to get to hear more.

(Listening at the moment to 13 with Michael Pisaro)
