Something to do during Covid-19 . Did I write that?

It's been a while since I posted regularly here, and I've been wondering how to get back 'in the swing' of it. But in the meanwhile I thought I'd share what I've been doing since March when the world went crazy.*

I thought I'd build up the YouTube videos of my music. It's been quite fun to do, and very revealing. I'd already made a few videos and posted them on the R3 Forum, but I've now done many more. And I'm using NotePerformer3, which gives much-improved sound. (I have explained in the past that, although I do have quite a few live performances, I don't like to use these for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I can't ask permission of players easily anymore.) So these are all computerised unless indicated otherwise.

The Covid-19 affected my prospects, too, for I had two possibilities for performances this year (amateur, by good groups) which will probably never happen now.

Still, there might be something here you'll enjoy. They've been fun to make at least. I'll add a few more as well.

    Arrangements:

    1. Dvorak: American Sinfonietta (from the string quartet)

    2. Elgar: "Shed" Symphony in C (1878, from 4 wind quintet pieces)

    3. Schubert: Scherzo from the 'Unfinished'

    4. Cimarosa: Il Maestro di Capella Overture

    Original works:

    5. Clarinet Concerto, op. 30 (1979)

    6. Fantasy Variations, op. 35 (1982)

    7. Symphony, op. 10 (1976)

    8. Festival Fanfare (2015)

    9. Festival Fanfare (1978)

    10. The Lent Lily, op. 60 (2017)

(NB: This is the best part of an hour long)

    11. A Boat Easy To Pull, op. 45 (1989)

    12. Little Suite, op. 54 (old sound)

    13. Suite: Where Once We Danced, op. 39 (old sound)

    14. A Yuletide Overture (2008)

    15. Horn Concerto, op. 13

    16. Mr Bunting Goes To Town, op. 28 (1979)

    17. Little Train to Nowhere Special (2015)

    18. Globetrotter (1996)

    19. The Leaving of Liverpool Fantasia on Sea Songs (2019)

You can download and share these as much as you like. In any case I hope you find something pleasant.

Thanks - I’ll explore. Quite a lot there, so might take a while.

I’ve heard of NotePerformer, but not tried it. See http://www.compositiontoday.com/blog/622.asp for more information.

That's an impressive amount of work you've done on those computer realisations (and the videos!) and the sound of the wind instruments in particular is convincing. String ensembles as ever are a problem, though, don't you think? Really one would have to use a different set of samples for each individual instrument.

Absolutely agree, but compared with what I've heard before... And (of course) if I were more expert anyway.

Ideally you'd need (say) 24 different samples for a string section of 24, just as you say.

Thanks so much for posting all these, Pabs - wow, what a banquet of delights! The sound is much better than before, you're right, but your music always shone through.

I don't have any experience with this kind of thing, but maybe a more realistic result might emerge from using just a couple of "solo" violins blended into a whole "section". And yes, as S_A says, thanks for putting all these things up.

The new versions definitely do sound better - though quite why I'm not absolutely sure. Maybe it's closer microphones.

In the UK Spitfire Audio seem to be big in this kind of thing, and the BBC SO - Discover set is worth investigating. There are a few other companies which are also doing virtual instruments. One which is supposed to be good is VSL - Vienna Symphonic LIbrary, and there are some which are very specialised, which give much more precise control over virtual string instruments - with what seems to be a very reaslistic sound.

One is a library from Ben Osterhouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slrHpGlxHQA Sospiro strings. Might be of use to somebody.

Thanks Pabs, I've listened to a couple so far, very impressive.

Neither do I - I've never been a techie person - but I can find things by trial and error, which I find quite fun.
