Utter waste

I'm really quite angry about this. Yesterday evening, I was looking at Facebook marketplace and I found a listing of "100s of classical cds for sale, £1 some still wrapped". I contacted the seller and I had the response "sorry, all gone in the skip now". I contained my anger and wrote back that it was a great shame. The response was "yes, it is" .

They could have been donated to charity or something. The seller was in Harrogate, I would happily have gone over and taken them off her hands.

It is frustrating, and I share your annoyance at potentially preventable waste, but even in 'normal' times there would have been a high probability of this outcome, and the current situation just adds to it. Skips are expensive and time critical, so for house clearances etc there is a limit to how much can be put aside waiting for an alternative destination, and finding such an alternative in itself takes time and effort which may not be available or justified - especially for something which is seen as outdated("who uses CDs these days?") and irrelevant("classical music, who listens to that?"). However given that charity shops are not an option currently in very many cases - and again even before the crisis many were limiting their CD stock - bulky and low value for many shops - and those that are open are limited by their storage capacity to quarantine stock, that isn't for the most part a solution. In some places the domestic disposal site might have accepted them for a re-use shop but again most of those are not currently available even if the sites themselves are beginning to open.

I don't know what the situation is in the USA, but uploading them to a hard drive here and then passing them on to someone else would breach copyright law, as royalty payments would only be passed on from the initial purchaser.

Probably like others on the forum I have a big boxful of CDs surplus to requirements many being duplicates from big box purchases - they will no doubt go to charity shops sometime soon. Anyone interested in any of them pm me and I’ll list them - no charge or a voluntary contribution to the local charities I support, who at this time have lost many of their fundraising activities.

Ditto to that. I tried Music Magpie with a view to off-loading them but there were so many they didn't want, and those they did would have gained me no more than a few pennies, that it hardly seemed worthwhile. They sit here still!

Similar experiences here. Last year I had the enormous task of clearing the house of a friend who had gone into care. There was a large (several thousand) collection of CDs, LPs and 78s. Dealers I contacted said they weren't taking large collections anymore. Some of the LPs and 78s were cherry-picked but most had to go with the house clearers as I was running out of time to find new homes for things. It was such a shame for a collection that had been cherished in better times, but of course these things are personal.

I do part-time work for a local hospice charity with several charity shops in the York and Selby area. We often get inundated with donations of records and CDs and, maybe needless to say, the classical ones don't sell very well. So, again sadly, many have to go to the tip.

But I agree, Jonathan, it does seem an utter waste.

....sounds like a business opportunity if you had the dryspace to warehouse, and a means to get your website up the google listings....and of course a solid interest in such things + time....must be thousands of people in such circumstances as have been divulged....(and a means to get rid of tripe)

If you have a smartphone you could download the Music Magpie app and sell CDs through that - though expect to be disappointed with the prices offered.
