    Ida Haendel

A chum has just told me Ida Haendel has died. Can anyone confirm this? Very sad news. In the same week as the great Jane Parker Smith, too.

In as much as Wiki now uses ‘was’ it would appear that you are correct. Not sure if Jane Parker Smith has a mention elsewhere on here but she should have. I always considered she had a lot more about her than her female contemporaries, much more of a real performance.

Very sad news. One of the greatest violinists I ever heard live.

          RIP, Ms. Haendel.

            Seconded.
I shared the stage with her as page-turner for her accompanist.

Britten and Walton concertos called for in tribute later today, I think.

PS: A BBC MM CD of Proms performances of the Britten and Brahms instead.

Sad news. I only saw her once and it was one of the more memorable concerts I have attended. Prom 1971 with Philharmonia and Erich Leindorf. I was standing rather near the front and got the full impact of her brilliant playing and striking red dress. The Brahms Concerto was between two Stravinsky pieces - Pulcinella (coincidentally, re above message!) and Firebird in Part II.

A great artist - I saw Haendel perform on just the single occasion - it was at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester.

She has left a valuable legacy of recordings.

I especially enjoy her Britten and Walton recordings.

Please, for the love of God, could someone tell Sean Raferty that it's Ida HAENDEL - not Ida HANDEL?!!

So exactly like Georg Fried(e)rich HAENDEL?
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Just saw this on the Presto site. I saw she is said to have been 91 but looking at photos of her Proms 1930s appearances she looks way older than 8 . I know some said she was born in 1923 which would seem to be more likely though I understand she used to produce her birth certificate .

Odd that only seconds before reading it I was looking at the Record of the Kennedy/Rattle Sibelius Concerto and thinking how much better the live Haendel/Rattle Record was . Probably my favourite Record was that Britten/Walton coupling . I had it on a HMV Greensleeve LP and played it endlessly .

RIP Ida , thanks for all the music and it is a great shame you did not get to be a Dame.

It is the Britten Concerto for me to listen to tonight.

Another great artis. On R3 Breakfast this morning Petroc said that when she performed the Sibelius VC, the composer said he had found the performer for my concerto he said. That’s quite a compliment. RIP Ida

For such a long career there are so few recordings - did she not like studio recordings?

                            RIP Ida

Just two recordings in my CD collection, both part of boxes. The above-mentioned Britten and the Bruch Concerto from 1948 with the Philharmonia in very good form under Rafael Kubelik, which I've just listened to with great enjoyment in her memory.
