    The Fela Kuti Sound

I have often wondered ref The Chromatic Scale/Range of Fela Kutis keyboard sound (or what ever it is)....whats going on. I'm not a musician, so I 'm sure the explaination could be quite simple. The sound of the keyboards seems to be quite differentto normal keyboards....I like it but it is odd IMO....

....what I am meaning is that the keyboard {electric piano/organ in piano mode) always sound slighty flat, or in some cases thin with a small wobble....almost any Fela Kuti keyboard solo is so....they surely must want it that way....been listening to FK since 900hr this morn...

8thob, I think I read somewhere, sometime, that Kuti's organ playing was influenced by Handel's music from when Kuti studied in London in the early 60s. Also he comes from a long line of preachers, so perhaps that's where the organ playing comes from. I don't know enough about Handel to know if that comes through in the organ playing. But, at heart, he's a kind of James Brown character, orchestrating the action...Fela wrote most of the material but, as many have said recently, the driving force behind Kuti's music was Tony Allen. That rhythm is so wonderful.
By the way, have you seen this young Chilean outfit playing alongside Fela's son, Seun. Such great energy. His music is so influential, and you can see why, I think.
Luego de haber participado en el festival Felabration 2015, que se lleva a cabo en Lagos, Nigeria, y haber compartido con la familia Kuti, Newen Afrobeat se ...

Agreed, 8th! Played it for weeks after I first heard, and saw, it.

Back in the 1970s records made their way from West Africa to the port of Barranquilla in Colombia and influenced the local music scene. Here's a version of Fela's 'Shakara' that Wganda Kenya took and transcribed - it became 'Shakalaode' and was given the Colombian Afrobeat treatment, and issued as part of an excellent Analog Africa compilation, 'Diablos Del Ritmo'.

It doesn't sound "flat" to my ears (it is great though )

              Ask a synth nerd ?

....Yes well 'flat' may be the wrong term....afraid I haven't got a very extensive musical vernacular....

...JC, yes it's great that Columbian stuff very full on....Fela Kuti rolls along better for me....I get a lot done when Fela's on the player....both painting pictures/decorating/in the workshop/lazing about plotting....I love the political link....great for football with no crowd....wondering whether Premier League should be piping Samba beat into stadiums to improve performance....

Great idea - I'd watch more footie...or just mute the picture and hear the tune...I love Fela in the car, too.
