But songs that should have been a hit, and songs that would be have made no 1 in a better world are different things.
The biggest chart travesty ever was March 1967 - The dreadful Humperdinck with ‘Release Me‘ keeping ‘Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields‘ off the No1 spot.

I can't stand that song, ts; any of the versions that I've heard. It wouldn't even make my bottom 100...no accounting for taste, I suppose!

A couple of other omissions are Joe Cocker’s ‘With a little help’ Chris Farlowe ‘Out of time’, Everly Brothers ‘Cathy’s Clown’ and Eddie Cochran ‘Summertime Blues’. But with this chosen list half of the panel probably wouldn’t register with anything before about 1980 unlike most of the forum’s pop radar which has probably disappeared about that time. Not much punk there ts!
'Albatross' was No. 1 for 1 week in 1969.
'For your Love' peaked at No. 3

'Tainted Love' - it's no 52 in the list, sainty.

One of the many items of trivia that I've remembered over the years is that 'Cathy's Clown' was issued as WB.1, being the first song released on the new Warner Brothers label.

Ah, crossed wires. I was referring to the Bill Nelson song that Markg mentioned , which reached #52 in the charts.

I did not know that trivia. When you mentioned it the image of a pinkish label with the WB logo came to mind across the decades. My sister bought it. In 1960 I was 11 and she was six years older. It was played a lot.

Now there's an idea - a bottom 100 - on second thoughts nah - there are too many candidates!

I bought the single when it was released and I’ve just listened to the song for the first time in many years,it’s a proper ear worm.

Actually, my personal piece of info is that I was born the day of the first chart - Al Martino, number 1!

I’m surprised Imagine isn’t on the list
