TV cop series in the 1950s often used jazzy theme music - one of the reasons why I got into jazz, especially of the "modern" variety, attracted to the romanticism and outsiderishness of being outside the law and dressing differently from the narrow conventions of the time. "No Hiding Place" used a jazz composer for its theme, but he went for the patriotic, Coates into Walton, stiff upper lip approach. I was 11 when this series started, and remember being allowed to stay up to watch it - a major step into adulthood. It probably started at 9 pm, which just goes to show how standards have fallen when it comes to bringing up children!
Wasn't Chief Inspector Lockheart of The Yard the original inspiration behind Private Eye's Knacker?

There was another Scotland Yard-type series at around the same time, which did use a jazzy theme tune - by a well-known British saxophonist. I'm trying to remember the title.
