TV cop series in the 1950s often used jazzy theme music - one of the reasons why I got into jazz, especially of the "modern" variety, attracted to the romanticism and outsiderishness of being outside the law and dressing differently from the narrow conventions of the time. "No Hiding Place" used a jazz composer for its theme, but he went for the patriotic, Coates into Walton, stiff upper lip approach. I was 11 when this series started, and remember being allowed to stay up to watch it - a major step into adulthood. It probably started at 9 pm, which just goes to show how standards have fallen when it comes to bringing up children!

Wasn't Chief Inspector Lockheart of The Yard the original inspiration behind Private Eye's Knacker?

Hard to Find Music 38 - when cops had stiff upper lips and you knew the bad guy from the good one, there were shows like No Hiding Place - the cops had hardl...

There was another Scotland Yard-type series at around the same time, which did use a jazzy theme tune - by a well-known British saxophonist. I'm trying to remember the title.

So do I - and bravo to who chose it for that series it does sound rather more like ships at sea than its original setting. In fact I am rather fond of Khachaturian's music especially his piano and violin concertos.

Grandstand was also good, from which the Motors nicked the tune for their jolly good hit single " Forget about you ".

Talking of Jim Parker, his jaunty theme for the BBC TV House of Cards has been a real earworm for the past 30 years!
