I think Howard Goodall should be mentioned in dispatches for the 'Blackadder' theme in its various manifestations - especially in the 4th series, the last episode of which I would schedule for peak-time viewing every Remembrance Day.

(I seem to have replied to my own message - but then I originally seriously considered posting under the name 'Technoprat').

Chi Mai from The Life and Times of David Lloyd George. It always seemed an odd choice for the subject but somehow it fitted:

The 1970s was arguably the golden age of TV themes, and mostly played on real instruments!
Although I didn't realise it at the time, this gem was even in 5/4 time...

And then here's a piece with electronic instruments
What do you mean by "real" ?
              I'm a bit puzzled ?

Not today's ubiquitous audio samples, multitracked, sequenced and quantized on computer to sound like an orchestra/ensemble of synchronised musicians.

                  Hummm
All digitally recorded music is "sampled"
The piece you linked to was probably multitracked

I'm really not sure what you are getting at ?

                    Thanks for clearing that up
There's a difference between a digital recording of a musical performance (if you prefer a "sample" of the whole performance made in real-time by one or more musicans) and constructing a tune/arrangement from single note/chord digital samples and multitracking them using sequencing software. I'm not making value judgments on either, but that's what I meant in the earlier post by "real" performance, versus a computer-constructed one.

I don't think you have an understanding of the process.
                      No problem
Many of the "real" performances that exist are also "patched" and constructed
the computer is simply a tool one might use to construct music

This for instance -- apologies if it's already been mentioned on the thread, but to my 12-year-old self its optimism & faith in human "progress" was mirrored by John Dankworth's propulsive theme...

                            Good call, Super Mac.

Play for Today was great too.
"Play for Today" intro. Grabbed from the 1975 episode "Rumpole of the Bailey."

Another good one from the Lew Grade stable - "Department S" by Edwin Astley.

Aired an ATV for 1 season, March 1969 to March 1970. Theme by Edwin Astley.
