RIP Lynn Harrell and Martin Lovett.

I'm surprised that no one has yet drawn attention to the death of two outstanding 'cellists yesterday.

Lynne Harrell, soloist and Martin Lovett, 'cellist in The Amadeus Quartet.

RIP, Maestri and thank you for the music.

I had always thought of Harrell as an Englishman. I didn’t realize that he was born in New York and educated in Dallas, although I knew that his father had sung at the Met, and I also didn’t realize that he had been a principal player in Cleveland under Szell.
Wikipedia also mentions that Delta Airlines banned him for life because of the miles that he had claimed for his Cello. They were bastards, and I will show the entry to a friend of mine who is a Delta employee and and a huge booster just to embarrass her.
My favorite record of his was the album that he did with Kennedy

An album a friend of mine described as 'Bouncers Anonymous!'*

Tonight, I'm going to listen to his recording of one of the Beethoven Piano Trios with Perlman and Ashkenazy.

I hadn't realised until yesterday that his father was Mack Harrell, the bass soloist in Bruno Walter's mono recording of the Beethoven Choral with the NYPO.

Unbelievable that two great cellists have been taken from us. RIP Lynn and Martin.

Sad to read of this. Many years ago I heard the Amadeus Quartet a few times, and I do have some of their recordings. I think I only heard Harrell live once, in Manchester during the Cello Festival which was held there a few years. That was around a decade ago. We have some of his recordings too - very good. Is that Cello Festival still running?

                  A great loss.

                  Matin Lovett RIP
                  Lynn Harell RIP

Sad news though Mr Lovett reached a grand old age - very sad about Lynn Harrell who has died so suddenly. He gave the best performance of the Dvorak I have ever seen live with the Halle in Sheffield in the 1990s .

For Lovett - Brahms String Quartets, Quintets, Sextets with The Amadeus Quartet plus.

I am surprised to read so few comments on Lynn Harrell - surely one of the very best solo and chamber cellists of the last 40 years- I have been enjoying the Eloquence release of the charming concertos by Victor Herbert which includes a surprisingly energetic accompaniment from ASMF/Marriner- charming works stunningly played. I recall also his splendid record of the Kodaly sonata with Nige.
