Intake your point. However Mabel's smiles were the most endearing part: obviously enjoying herself, her success, and in particular performing in front of her mum (who as she said, had received the same prize exactly 30 years previously). Must everything be done seriously?

I always felt a bit guilty about enjoying this band's music after they espoused some politics that I didn't agree with. I know, I know.....
But that was then and this is now, and in any case, this was a fine record, as were quite a few of their others....again, haircuts best left unmentioned...

Actually, don't you think it's possible to have mixed feelings about some music?

I think it is possible.

Also, I have found my tastes have expanded when I've dismissed or got over my own initial doubts about certain types of music. Some music I've thought - initially - was too dissonant, some - too cheesy or schmaltzy, some too crude and repetitive etc. I think the idea is that these initial doubts also contain some fascination so that one returns to the music under more propitious circumstances so that it clicks.

I used to tend to find something unpleasant, and only later discover why. Politics and musical taste marry up pretty well, given time. I never knew Vaughan Williams and Holst were socialists - it was wonderful to discover that taste and what laid behind it married up. OK, socialists of the William Morris type. But that's more in tune with our time than people realised it was with theirs.
