    Guilty Rock and Pop Pleasures

Got to be a place for things that inexplicably cheer us up , good taste out of the window , band in question forgiven for all their other crimes against art, hairdressing, whatever.

    Love this. No apologies.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

sort of a guilty pleasure, not the song so much, which is wonderful, but the lyric, which for some reason is one of my favourite pop lyrics.

Kind of encapsulates the easy way that Americans often have of writing so well about place.

so not really a guilty pleasure at all !

I left my home in Norfolk Virginia California on my mind
I straddled that greyhound and Rode and Raleigh
      And on across Caroline.

We stopped at Charlotte the bypass rock hill
We never was a minute late
We were ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown
      Rollin' outta the Georgia state.

We had motor trouble it turned into a struggle
      Half way 'cross Alabama.
And that 'hound broke down and left us all stranded
      In downtown, Birmingham.

Right away, I bought me a through train ticket
      Riding across Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flier out of Birmingham
      Smoking in the New Orleans

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just help me get to Houston town
There are people there who care a little 'bout me
And they won't let the poor boy down

Sure as you're born me, bought me a silk suit
      Put luggage in my hand
And I woke up high over Albuquerque
On a jet to the Promised Land

Workin' on a T bone steak at La Carte
Flying over to the golden state
And when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate

Swing low sweet chariot, come down easy
      Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings
And let me make it to the telephone

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia
      Tidewater four ten O nine
Tell the folks back home this is the Promised Land callin'
And the poor boy's on the line
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

this is all wrong, and miles away from their incendiary classics, but somehow makes me smile.

How are The Cranberries a guilty pleasure?

I don't really have guilty pleasures in music - unless it's Serial Apologist making me feel guilty for liking some techno

Maybe I've not quite got over the guilt I felt back in the early 70s when I realised how much I loved Karen's voice (took a few pelters from my pals on that one back then); because when the original question was asked I immediately thought of the Carpenters.

Isn’t it about judgement and ego , and our tendency to try to sort out the “ authentic “ and the “ inauthentic” .

Anyway, as you say, you either like it or don’t.

Actually, don't you think it's possible to have mixed feelings about some music?

                            I think it is possible.

Also, I have found my tastes have expanded when I've dismissed or got over my own initial doubts about certain types of music. Some music I've thought - initially - was too dissonant, some - too cheesy or schmaltzy, some too crude and repetitive etc. I think the idea is that these initial doubts also contain some fascination so that one returns to the music under more propitious circumstances so that it clicks.

A contemporary guilty pleasure: I was impressed by this young lady's live performance at the Brits:

And she gave a lovely acceptance speech acknowledging her parents' contribution. (And yes, guilty m'lud, that dress is hot).
                              Pacta sunt servanda !!!
