    Tommy's podcast

Remember Tommy Pearson (of Stage & Screen, and before that The Music Machine and general Radio 3 all-rounder)? He's just sent us this email about his new podcast. I'll quote the email in full, as he welcomes responses from, well, anyone really

"I just wanted to let you know about our new podcast which was originally going to be something rather different but, because of the virus situation, is now a slightly more fun format. It's called The Classical Top 5 and it's regulars Fiona Maddocks, Richard Bratby and me, together with a special guest, offering our Top 5 of something related to classical music. The first episode was Top 5 pieces of music for lockdown, and we were joined by Stephen Maddock, Chief Exec of the CBSO. The next one (recorded today and released tonight) is Top 5 Conductors and we were joined for that by Rob Cowan.

It's always a wide-ranging discussion and we hope that listeners will enjoy compiling their own Top 5 lists for us to mention in future shows, as well as discuss on our FB page (https://www.facebook.com/theclassicaltop5).

The podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify and Podbean (https://classicaltop5.podbean.com/).

I haven't been on Radio 3 for 15 years, so I'm not sure whether I qualify for inclusion on this site any more, but I hope the show might be of interest and we'd love as many people to get involved as possible - and to disagree with our choices, of course!

    Sending all best,

    Tommy Pearson"
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Tomorrow it will be different, naturally. Walter is the only one I didn't hear live.

Great choice. But I'd substitute Sir Adrian Boult for one of them. The problem is, I'm not sure which one!

Interested to see that Abbado hasn't been mentioned yet.

                      Today, I would go with:

                      Abbado
                      Mravinsky
                      Karajan
                      Szell
                      Barbirolli

                      Ask me again tomorrow!

                          Or Carlos Kleiber.

                          Kleiber. C
                          Davis. C
                          Klemperer
                          Furtwangler
                          Haitink

It's an impossible job to pick five names and I am already thinking of ones that should have gone in instead.

They have now moved on to top 5 fiddlers but finding out who has been chosen is impossible - they want you to take the app / podcast ..... so I asked if there was a list we could read ...... and they replied

“In due course, but we'd love you to listen to the podcast - it's why we make it! “

                            Grump, grump, grump ........
