International Women's Day on Radio 3

I think we should have a thread for flagging new composers, works etc discovered from today's broadcasts devoted to women composers.

To their credit, Radio 3 has improved its coverage of women composers throughout the year. There used to be a patronising culture of tokenism on this day, immediately reverting to the old ways on the following day. Last year I remarked that Radio 3 on IWD was much more interesting than the normal fare, giving us new music to explore, rather than yet another playing of single movements of the like of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony.

My rather sleepy listen to Breakfast this morning felt nonetheless different from normal - even -Sounds of the Earth'.

A fair number of unfamiliar names on Through the Night. I did hesitate an instant, thinking they'd tacked an odd chap on the end, one Jean Coulthard, but the picture seems to be of good old Mario Bernardi. Jean Coulthard very much a Canadian woman composer. I haven't listened to the programme yet.

Private Passions atm in a different format - focusing on women composers as chosen by guests (m&f) over past programmes.

I was surprised to hear that Nina Simone was the most requested music on the programme.

Very worthy choice - brilliant all round musician - and didn’t suffer fools gladly!

Not radio 3, but a perfectly timed and thrilling contribution....!

Australia are taking women's cricket to new heights with their achievements, writes BBC Sport's Amy Lofthouse.

A great shame that England missed out on a final the way they did.

Disappointing that there is no sign of Gubaidulina or Rebecca Saunders (today) - for me they would sit near the top of any list of composers from the last 30 years.
Do I detect a subtle prejudice here - it's good to have women composers, so long as they are not too challenging?

We heard Gubaidulina's Percussion Concerto during the Edinburgh Festival last year. Eight Bass drums at the end! I genuinely feared for the Usher Halls' integrity! At least Gubaidulina's music does get aired at other times. And I'm sure I have recordings of Saunder's music.

Is that a prejudice ? Isn’t it just R3 programming as usual ?

May, as usual, be wrong but I don’t think we have had any Ustvolskaya yet .....
