Beat Beethoven - the Klemperer challenge

I have been , perhaps uncharitably, slightly irritated by the constant trailing of this very worthy Sport relief challenge to run 5k faster than a performance of Beethoven 5 by a BBC orchestra . I then remembered that in 2019 I did the couch to 5 k programme. My one success at actually running 5k took 39’ 18 - some 23 seconds faster than the not very con brio recording by Klemperer on YouTube . Are there any forumites who can outrun Carlos Kleiber (33’20)?

Well the repeats would get in the way of it being the fastest, so any recording with or without - my guess it will be an early recording or a hipp recording.

I note that the string quintet version of the 5th recorded by Ancient Consort Praha comes in at 28 minutes.

My initial guess was Norrington who at 33.25 is a bit slower than Kleiber . I think they both observe 1st movt repeats . 10 years ago I could have outrun them but not these days. The world record is 12.14 which is half way thru Kleiber’s adagio....

I don’t like running much , I dislike running to music even more , and I would find running to Beethoven 5 a bit tricky . It is too interesting a piece of music to work as a background. However I think I will have a go at beating the great Klemperer’s time. Toscanini is 31’28 with Ist movement repeat - great performance ...

Whilst on the one hand I know I could smugly beat any Beethoven 5 performance over 5k, with or without repeats, I want no part of a Radio 3 broadcast that focussed on presenter who’s running and commentating with the symphony as wallpaper.

Hmmmm! Yes, a worthy cause and also an attempt to get people interested in good music (did anybody see the crap on BBC Breakfast this morning?)

But nevertheless, I cannot but wonder if this should come into the 'How Worse Can it Get?' thread.
