    Midi 2.0

A new/upcoming technical standard might change the way some electronic music sounds as Midi gets an update.

Perhaps of less interest to classical, jazz or folk musicians though.

Some of the new technical features such as bi-directional communications may be helpful.

"music played on MIDI 2.0 instruments will feel more analog... he thinks it’s hard to know what music will sound like 50 years from now" You're not wrong there. But I think there must be room for something more accessible to the non-professional than OSC which doesn't have the clunkiness of the original MIDI (ie. isn't conceived in terms of 40-year-old digital technology). It's probably a sound commercial proposition and has a lot of money behind it so I dare say it will become the new standard before long, even if there will no doubt be a clique of 7-bit MIDI hipsters who say the old version has more "warmth".

As with mp3 - which introduces distortion, and some people actually like it - allegedly, so it seems some recorded music is made deliberately with that kind of distortion added in

It's probably still to early to tell whether the "new" Midi will lead to significant benefits, but it may overcome some problems with dynamic range. These have perhaps already been overcome to extent with kludges, and non-linearities in the way systems interact, but the newer system might reduce the need for any such tricks. This is just a hunch, based on some practical experiences over the last few months, as well as probably a lot of ignorance!
