That is, however, three fragments more than Richard Barrett.)

We also learn that Debussy's Feu d'Artifice was broadcast 14 times, l'Isle Joyeux 20 times (thrice in the Molinari orchestration - 14 of the broadcasts were during either Breakfast or Essentially Crassic ); and La Mer 16 times in full, with 12 further broadcasts of individual movements. So 62 out of 800 broadcasts - which isn't quite Heldy's "70%" (I hope nobody took him up on his bet!) but still showing a considerable lack of imagination from the various producers. (29 Faun's afternoon capers - mostly, ironically, broadcast before noon - making that the most frequently broadcast of Claude's output. The Girl had her flaxen hair done 15 times.)

Thanks Ferney. I’d love to get hold of this spreadsheet - is it readily available? Because I work a lot from home I often listen from 09.00 onwards . My facile remark about those pieces was just a perception that L’Ile Joyuese was on ALL THE TIME . So much so I decided to ‘have a bash’ at it . Mistake - it’s really hard...though I can make the last two pages sound ok .

I don't know of a Spreadsheet as such - I just used the individual composer search on Andrew's Listing pages (via the link I posted in #27). Turning this information into a single spreadsheet, (showing all the pieces broadcast, when, and by whom) is beyond me.

It's a MySQL database on the server; the interface is html. I've just checked, and unfortunately the durations are stored as text in the format "hh:mm:ss" so it will take a bit more work than I thought.

The database actually contains durations....

... why are we thinking that a work's duration is a guide to anything? There are masterpieces by Bach, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Brahms, Mompou, Webern that say what they need to say in a couple of minutes. I understand that The Dream of Gerontius goes on for an hour and a half.

They seem to like playing only two works by Berlioz. Le Corsair or Carnaval Romain, or ill add another, Symphonie Fantastique.

21 appearances of the Roman Carnival, Bbm; 5 of Le Corsair; (King Lear got 3 broadcasts, Beatrice & Benedict Ovt got 9). 11 complete broadcasts of the Fantastique, though with a lot of individual Balls, Marches to Scaffolds and Orgies in Hell. Altogether, Hector got 322 broadcasts last year (his 150th annivesary year).

There is a serious underlying point though . The preponderance of 5 to 12 minute pieces like overtures and Debussy miniatures comes about because the sequence programmes operate on the philosophy of “if you don’t like this there’ll be something else in a minute “

- and demostrating what has often been commented on this Forum, that R3, rather than cultivating an individual public profile for itself, is instead seeking rather to emulate the presentation style and content of Classic FM - with ever-failing results. (Just under 2million listeners per week from June to September last year; just over 5million fro Classic FM in the same period.)
