Music editing - MuseScore

Maybe it's hidden in the fine print, but I've not succeeded in doing that yet. I'll ask on another forum.

One thing in the video was mentioned, which may be less usual in classical music scores, is the change instrument on a stave, or part. For example, in a flute part, there might be an instruction to change to piccolo, and vice versa. I think this kind of change is much more common in theatre bands, where some players may actually be playing different kinds of instruments.

Changing instruments, for wind players, is pretty normal stuff.
Very common in orchestral music.
Is this another "tricky" thing with Musescore ?

Is changing instruments usually written out on the same staff of the score? In parts it would make sense, and I think it also makes sense for scores, but I'm not sure what the conventions are. I can't think of a piece where that's marked in the score, though some might ask for doubling at the octave. Although I play (or have played) the flute I never got on to the piccolo, or bass flute, so haven't been exposed to that kind of part.

You clearly didn't watch that video - perhaps you're too busy, but the guy who produced it has been doing "design" videos on several systems, including Sibelius. If you have an odd 35 minutes it's quite a laugh and informative.

Just found a couple of good things about Musescore - might be useful to some, and possibly to me.

1. Under tools there is a option to remove/expand repeats. This will produce a new score with all the repeats, including first time, second time etc. bars all expanded out.

2. Took me a while to find this one, but in the Repeats and Jumps palette there is a mark to repeat individual bars. I'm not sure if it does mutliple bars - there was discussion about this on the forums some while bak. In my version that appears just under the Dynamics palette in the list.

Also I found out how to compress a full score if not all the instruments are needed for the first few pages - though I'm not sure whether there is a convention that they should all be listed on the first page.

Format> Style >Score > "Hide empty staves within systems" [Check box]

I'm not yet sure whether expanding can be done on a per line basis, or per section (e.g. woodwind, brass etc.), or per page - or if the whole caboodle needs to be expanded first in order to insert a few lines of an instrument not shown "yet".

I haven't evaluated version 3.5, so don't know if the new features are in fact improvements.
