    Well you have mentioned it!

    Don't know - I've never been self-employed!

Ask your accountant, who is doubtless an expert.

Because I really can’t bothered . But it is a fact that self employed status is tax advantageous compared to PAYE.

Those are nothing to do with tax reliefs.

Self employment has advantages, ( generous tax reliefs) and disadvantages, ( no sick pay).

( I have done 20 years self employed, and 3 years as a tax manager at HMRC,so I do actually know whay I’m talking about on this).

          "Generous tax relief" ????

          Where ?

I've no problem with paying tax
it all depends on how one works (and what one considers "work" to be)

Actually I have dual status sometimes ... I don't think I pay more tax on the PAYE work I sometimes do

          All a bit OT though
Looks like we might actually get this Brexshit nonsense cancelled after all which will be a great benefit to culture

Never having been self-employed, I've never needed an accountant. I imagine their services aren't free?

Self employed people get tax relief on all business travel. PAYE People don’t get tax relief for travel to their place of work. That is a more generous tax relief.

              As an example...

                      See my post above.

Self employed people can set many costs against their income, for example a proportion of buying and running a car, and other capital items, in ways not available to PAYE ( Schedule E ) employees . Many groups of workers have fought hard to keep their Self employed ( Schedule D )status, because of the tax advantages.
Of course not everything about SE is advantageous, but tax certainly is.

As you will know, there are historic reasons for much of this, for example sectors such as oil and gas still feature a large number of supposed contractors who on application of the relevant tests would likely be deemed to be employed, starting from scratch. Also generally there is the sense that those of us who are self employed bear the commercial risk of getting work, unlike an employee (risks of losing one’s job notwithstanding), who is guaranteed work, can take holiday without the risk of losing work.

The reliefs point I would say is moot. Employees pay tax on private medical insurance, it being a deductible expense for the self employed. But the cost of buying cover in the market is higher for the self employed than a sizeable employer. Swings and roundabouts.

This is all OT vis a vis the EU. The simple fact is however that much of the family leave law from which Uk employees benefit would not exist had the U.K. not been a member of the EU. Uk governments have, during the 25 years I’ve been an employment lawyer, consistently resisted matching the benefits enjoyed in other member states. That a Tory minister can get away on national tv unchallenged with claiming the U.K. has superior employment protection just shows you how crass is the debate, and how uninformed the main stream media.

My point was precisely that their are indeed advantages and disadvantages of self employment and employment. More generous tax reliefs under schedule D than Schedule E are an advantage of self employment .

Peter Oborne's recent acknowledgements of right-wing bias in the mainstream media, broadcasters as well as newspapers, have become hot property for those of us on the left who have long been proclaiming such:
