I was once charged on reentering the UK for a half bottle of alcohol - since we had drunk some of the bottle already while on holiday, and we were also threatened with a fine, which was IIRC "graciously" waived.

I'm sure the customs officer was not personally involved, but "only doing his job".

Additionally, getting money while abroad, for example in Spanish banks, used to be very tedious, and required not only queuing up at one queue, but actually queuing up twice - once to be allowed to proceed to the second queue, and then finally in order to obtain the cash.

The more modern more cashless society may be helpful, though there may be glitches if banking is disrupted by the latest changes - which may or may not occur.

Is someone in the UK's infrastructure going to set a "Preferences" file to "Yes" or "No" on midnight on 31st October, which will cause a massive chain reaction through all possibly affected aspects of national and also international infrastructure?
Those were the days! I still remember my father sorting out travellers cheques for holidays in France, and also trying to make sure we had enough money to pay for petrol back to the ferry port, but as little cash as possible to bring back.
My old passport from student days has two entries for export of currency, 1977 and 78. The latter was for a field trip to Paris and I remember people I didn't normally have much to do with suddenly wanting to be best friends when they realised I wasn't going to avail myself of my duty free allowance.

Unfortunately I do remember all of that but don't think it was all that trying. In a Greta sort of way probably quite a good thing to make tourism more difficult, if that is what happens

I can also remember queing up for a ferry in France, when one "plonker" from the UK said something derogatory about France and French officials. Pretty stupid really. The policeman had a gun - I can't now remember whether he took it out, but he did say something back which shut the guy up for a few moments, and we all held our breath.

Is that something we really want to remember? Probably not - but it happened.

I heard an interview on R5 this morning with a Labour MP who was quite happy to vote for something he hadn't even read and knows will make the most vulnerable in society even worse off.

                    2nd vote.....Yes... Yes....some relief....
(Even if the double vote was, shall we say, "convenient" for the, er, "rebels"....)

There is still some hope now.....but what will happen... what will this rogue Johnson/Cummings admin do?

Let's hope they both end up in the ditch

                        Reciprocal tax arrangements ?
hummm even if there is a "deal" no-one (and I get this from festivals and venues in the rest of the EU) has any idea how this might work. What is likely is that folks will have to pay tax locally then try to claim it back... great if you have a large amount of capital BUT for self-employed sole traders / small organisations / small ensembles ?

The really boring stuff that folks with PAYE jobs never have to deal with
Although of course PAYE employees don't get the more generous tax reliefs that self employed people do.

Indeed. What are these more generous tax reliefs for the self-employed?

but i'm also wondering what these "generous tax reliefs for the self-employed" are?
