    Long concert programmes

I think we all know that concert programmes have been getting shorter

And perhaps that’s a good thing

The Munich Phil Facebook page showed a Bruno Walter poster showing Das Lied von der Erde in the first half with the Resurrection Symphony after the interval!!!!

I remember seeing an all Elgar programme from the 1920's given by the LSO.

    Introduction and Allegro.

    Violin Concerto.

    Dream of Gerontius.

It was re-created by the RSNO to celebrate the concert's 200th anniversary. Two intervals and it was warm!

If you wish to repeat the experience (also in much warmer and more comfortable surroundings than Ludwig's own audience), pasto, the Philharmonia are also re-creating the event in the RFH next March:

Concert programmes seem to have become shorter over a timescale of centuries, but have they done so over our lifetimes? I'm not sure. I don't have a preference one way or the other in isolation from the actual content - some concerts need to be long, others need to be shorter, just as the same can be said for the compositions they contain. For me that Mahler programme would have been a wonderful experience (though I would have put the two pieces the other way around), whereas on the other hand any all-Elgar programme would be unbearably long...

Nor me, but that's because I don't go to ones that I consider are poor value for money.

I don't think that time spent in a venue is directly proportional to the value of the experience

                    Depends how old we are.

Indeed, but it's one of the considerations (alongside travel costs, meal expenses, etc).

Obviously, but I don't think any of us was alive a century ago, maybe I'm wrong!
