I was there for this one. It was a nice time to be in London - Mackerras also conducted the OAE at St John's Smith Square in a programme of Mozart concertos with Monica Huggett and Antony Pay.

Listening to the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur. (Philips, 1989). Very perky interpretation. Marvellous orchestral playing!

What a splendid compilation ‘the complete Hallé/James Loughran recordings’ would be!

Alison, I’ve been saying this for years - who owns them - perhaps the Halle label could bring out a monster box, the queue would be massive - or maybe just you and me! JL must be the most underrated conductor of the mid to late C20th!

Absolutely agreed in that JL must be the most underrated conductor of the mid to late C20th!
I spent 3+ of the most wonderful years of my musical life, 1966-1970, playing for not only 'Jimmy' Loughran in the BBCSSO, but also for another 'unsung great', Christopher Seaman.

The EMI recordings are not the problem - it is the Enigma recordings!

I was delighted to hear Christopher Seaman conducting a disc of Howell's 'cello concerto on Record Review this morning. He was a regular fixture with the SNO in the 80's but he seemed to fall of the map at some point. Iirc, a conductor who was extremely good at remembering tempi. No getting excited during the performance as some were wont to do!

His RVW 2 with the Rochester is good too!

All repeats too! Mrs. PG has left the room twice during movt. 4 which has afforded me the opportunity to start the movement from the beginning x2. 'My goodness, what a long piece this is' comments my beloved!!

...and across the Pennines he was a regular with the Halle in Sheffield City Hall - also as a stand-in I think for Kempe, a superb Brahms 1 with the Munich PO - which I think led him to more work with them!

You know I’ve never written a top 20 down, but I love a long symphony and the great C major is up there among the best. The ACL70 Concertgebouw seduced me around 60 years ago and I’ve been hooked since!
