I let Radio 3 run on after Building a Library this morning. The rest of Record Review and Music Matters were fine. But I'd forgotten just how infantile This Classical Life was/is. Mostly talking over pop music in a giggling/mock serious way. If they must have this kind of rubbish, they might at least change the programme's name.

Yes after the Levine sequence on Music Matters I opted out for the complete Rubbra Symphonies from Richard Hickox on Qubuz .One of the Saturday jazz programmes also features constant voicing over the music just when it starts getting interesting usually to be told something that you could have worked out for yourself.....

That's where the online listing comes into play. You can avoid the 'presentation' and check whether any particular item played might elicit a follow-up via other media.

....but usually the programme which follows it often good....(shame I'm not a young thrusting 22 again and a guest on the prog'....the lack of Led Zepplin tracks leads to a hollow lunchtime)....

How would they know what you talk like ? The problem with the show is the constant voicing over the music and the somewhat limited range of adjectives used to describe what they are talking over.

But that's what I was talking about yesterday on whatever thread it was. Music shouldn't interrupt other things that you're doing. It's just tune-in-tune-out stuff for when other things have gone a bit quiet.

depends I guess whether they are aiming for a pre-school or a sub-teen audience

Part of the problem is that if the programme is aimed at a pre-teen audience, they are unlikely to be listening to radio 3. My nephew is 12 and I doubt he's ever even heard of Radio 3.

It was an uncle of mine who, when I was around 7 or 8, introduced me to the Third Programme via his new-fangled VHF (i.e FM) radio. I never looked back.

I think it should be switched to Radio 1 or 6 Music where the people it seeks to attract will be listening . On Radio 3 all it does is annoy .

I think, certainly in the case of 6 Music, they want to expand it, hence it encroaches on Radio 3's airtime to offer alternative programming for 6 Music listeners. They would rather see Radio 3 contract (eventually, who knows? perhaps just become a Through the Night service).

Not a snowball’s chance - if the Beeb was serious about Classical music for the younger it would used 6 for this long ago. They’d rather annoy the oldies - combating ageism isn’t part of their diversification regime!
