EXACTLY! But will SHE have the guts to know that this is not doing her career much good at all IMO.

I've been musing over this and have to ask - in what way? Taken at face value, having her 'own show' on R3 will surely be seen as a good thing? Those who investigate further and actually listen to the programme won't necessarily share the forum view of it? Or have there been wider, and potentially influential/damaging, criticisms of "This Classical Life"?
Apologies for all the questions, but I'm interested.

          I’m agog with indifference!

I found a review in the Daily Tellygraph by radio columnist Charlotte Runcie (his granddaughter):-

It’s refreshing when radio stops trying to attract a nebulous mythical youth listener and just gives airtime to people who know their stuff. The result is a programme for all ages [opines Ms Runcie aged 30].

The current relentless trailing of the prog seems to suggest to me that maybe they are getting more and more flustered over loss of interest or its serial bashings?

                That trail drives me NUTS!

Jess Gillam. 'Do you listen to piano music differently to other music?'

                Unnamed pianist. ' Fundamentally, yes'.

It's the fundamentally that makes me cringe!!

Fundamentally, yes, I do quite like the programme. Nearly all my R3 listening is now in arrears, on BBC Sounds, and I do find I often have more interesting or pressing programmes to listen to, which are about to go out of date, so have not listened to all episods of This Classical Life.

The incessant trails do drive me nuts though (as do any trails really!).

I’m sorry to say this. I quite like Jess Gillam, but this programme is dire. Sickly chat with wallpaper muzak. An intelligent young person is being morphed into an Elizabeth A Mk II

And thereby done a dreadful disservice to the reputation and thus credible role and necessity for progs to encourage 'young' R3 listeners.

Did I ever mention that I thought Elgar's oratorios were a pile of cr*p ?

Oh dear! I got into trouble the other day for saying that about so-called 'Folk Music' Mind you, somebody else told me recently that he was not keen on Elgar's choral music and, if you know who it was, you would be very surprised indeed.

Asked about what he thought about folk music, Elgar is famously alleged to have declared, "I AM folk music".

                              He was lying
He wrote some great choral and orchestral music though

I went to see Jess in concert a couple of Fridays ago. I found her music-making absolutely superb, with sensitivity alongside the virtuosic fireworks, and a lovely warm personality that really communicated itself. I agree with EA that her R3 programme does her no favours and I just hope that maybe her talents will be put to better use on R3 sometime in future.
