    Rites and Wrongs

Visited the Plymouth HMV shop yesterday and saw they had a revamped 'HMV own label' popular classics range, unsurprisingly at £5.99 or two for a tenner.

Didn't expect to find anything I wanted but was hugely delighted to find a pairing of Simon Rattle's Rite of Spring and Petrushka. Good standard stuff you may be thinking, so why the excitement?

Proudly emblazoned across the front in large letters: THE RIGHT OF SPRING!

    How are the mighty fallen

Bought a copy immediately in the hope that it will become as valuable a collector's item as certain misprinted stamps! Please submit offers by PM

Two odd things though: the back of the case has the 'rite' spelling, as does an illustration of the front of this disc in a free leaflet advertising the whole range.

It's all gone to the dogs bow wow - but then I'm reminded that 'Gone to the Dogs' was a Sketch by Boz, or maybe just an article by Dickens a coupla hundred years ago, so plus ca change. The main thing is that there still is an HMV in Portsmouth. We should all make a point of going to these shops at least once a month and thereby keeping alive that which we value most: so well done LeMartinPecheur.

Perhaps an alternative Digahelev commission for a ballet about driving in Paris...?

I think The Right Of Spring should have been reissued on the ERG label.

No, no. It's Essential Classics - even more suitable.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

One of my friends has suggested that, in Japan, this would be called a "Corrector's Edition"

                    Boom-tish!

It's presumably a unique performance, but is it any good?
Tempted to see if HMV York has a copy when I'm next in town, but hard to justify on top of the Universal and Sony sets I've already got (and Muti and Mackerras on EMI).

I'd be interested to know if/ when HMV correct it so please report further sightings*.! (This may influence the value of my purchase, of course...)

The performances are more than decent I believe - I already had the 'Right' c/w Apollo - but haven't unsealed my new copy to hear the Petrushka yet in case it ruins its value

PS In order to avail myself of the Two for a Tenner offer I hunted for a makeweight and came away with Bostridge's Britten Illuminations, Serenade and Nocturne. Didn't need another version of any of these but hell, Bostridge really is brilliant in all of them and I'm no particular fan of him usually!

                          *Or should that be 'sitings'?

My Japanese and Chinese acquaintances join in the run. None take offence, as none is intended. Native English speakers an evoke howls of laughter as they struggle with Chinese tones.
