    Andre Previn has died...

Just announced on In Tune. Very, very sad news.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who contributes to this forum whose early interest in serious music was nurtured by 'Andre Previn's Music Night'.

RIP, Maestro and thank you for all you did for music in The UK.

Particularly poignant as the 90th birthday celebrations were just getting underway...

This would be a great opportunity for the BBC to re-show some of these 'Andre Previn's Music Night' programmes.

Indeed very sorry to hear the news. He was a fantastic all round musician - we will not hear his like again. RIP Andre.

..and a fine Mozart pianist himself. Boult thought v. highly of him as a soloist in their concerto recordings together.
I was at first surprised when he was appointed conductor of the LSO, but I soon changed my mind. I have many of his recordings. Perhaps his career was proof that there are no types of music, just music.

According to the BBC News site "Previn is best known for ditching a lucrative career in Hollywood to pursue his love of classical music as a jazz pianist." I'm not sure about the syntax there, or the assertions.

Certainly it was Sir Andre Previn who inspired me to be more interested and involved in classical music. RIP AP

Indeed. Had he been born fifty years later, he would have been just the person to be engaged now to bring in these hoped-for new audiences. I had no idea that he had got older

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

No, all they'll show will be a repeat of Morecambe and Wise.

Music Night was one of those regular broadcasts, like Antony Hopkins Talking About Music, that gave me a precious entry point.....

Favourites...? The LSO Walton and Nielsen 1sts, that electrifying virtuosity and warmth of melodic expression.... his LSO Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony became a classical icon... and no wonder....!

Only a few weeks ago, I was streaming this regularly, with much pleasure....

Very sad news - a terrific conductor ,pianist ,musician and communicator .

Off to wallow in his legendary Rachmaninov Second Symphony recording.

I value - and listen to frequently - his recording of Turangalila Symphony.

Deeply saddened to read this news on the LSO webpage just now (obit @ https://lso.co.uk/more/news/1207-obi...9-30-2019.html).

While too young to have been around during his tenure as the LSO's chief conductor, I had the fortune to attend several of their concerts together in more recent times. The last of these in 2015 (and I think probably his very last appearance in London) was the finest performance of Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony I'm ever likely to hear. A memory to cherish.

                              RIP
