The bbc genome is a wonderful resource - digitized programme pages (radio and TV) from the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009. Simply go to 'bbc genome' and enter as many details as you can - artist, work, date, channel etc.Originally posted by BBMmk2 View PostComment

Those four EMI/WArner boxes of Boult's recordings are a very good value way of getting to know his work - the VW and Elgar boxes , From Bach to Wagner and finally the Tchaikovsky to Gershwin box .Comment

Amazon has drawn this to my attention.
Does anybody know how good are the transfers?
I have most of these on LP or CD, and wondered if they are worth the additional expense.
( I, prompted by Mme. M,, have observed a tendency to acquire duplicate copies of CDs. This must cease, so I am told.)Comment

If the Walton symphony really is in stereo then that justifies the cost (I'm already rehearsing my excuse). I have a mono LP and had no idea that there had been a stereo recording.Comment

Playing the First Hand CD right now..
... (absolutely superb 1st movement, in its control, tautness and perfect pacing easily a match for Previn or Daniel. Will continue later!)
It is very good stereo for the date, immediate, full-bodied and vivid if a bit dry. The typical Boult dividing of violins left/right adds greatly to the Waltonian rhythmical cut and thrust.
Very good dynamic range, smooth clean transfer without harshness, some audible hiss, but never distracting. Imaging not super-specific but acceptable, with a degree of studio ambience.
No-one will be disappointed with the sound of the First Hand Issues - they're very well - indeed outstandingly - done.
