No I didn't! Thanks for that information, cloughie. Did you know that the brief tenor sax break on "Lady Madonna" was by Ronnie Scott?

No I didn’t but it doesn’t surprise me, George Martin pulled in some good musicians to Beatles sessions!

Bear in mind that I tend to listen to this music in the car, so it shouldn't make me go too fast...

For quality English quirkiness, try albums by Hatfield and the North, National Health and Bruford (founded by the ex-Yes drummer but not drummer-dominated by any means). All their albums contain finely-crafted compositions and superb playing. You might also like the debut album by UK (a shortlived "super group" of John Wetton, Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson).

Well yes she does sound inviting! Don’t know about the grumbly grimblies though - I’ve experienced the occasionally inquisitive jackdaw that needed release and that was enough! One of the products of the first Prog era was the wonderful lyrics, many of the total nonsense but well, they told a tale!

I'm in two minds about whether they were prog, or not. You're absolutely right about the upbeat feeling to their music, though.

I think it was Paul McCartney's idea to bring Scott in, then very little of his work was used on the released single. I believe he wasn't happy and they apologised to him later.

They are what I meant by referring to jazz elements in prog rock.

Very interesting how that band came out of The Wilde Flowers when some of the personnel split to form Soft Machine. The Softs moved up here to join up with The Pink Floyd Sound at the Free School in Notting Hill Gate, near the tenement where the movie "Performance" had James Fox meeting Mick Jagger for a near mènage a quatre, while Caravan-to-be lived pro tem in a caravan somewhere near Broadstairs, hence the name adopted. I think it was Joachim Berendt referred to them as "the English Jefferson Airplane".
