Hope springs eternal, cloughie! It's true that much was wiped in the cultural vandalism of the 1970s but there must still be an awful lot there from the past 40/50 years that would still make the project worthwhile. Yes, it's been talked about before and never happened but this feels different. The news story does say that the BBC has 'one of the biggest classical music archives in the world'. So there must be quite a lot. Presumably there will be no contractual problem with recordings made specifically for broadcast, but perhaps in the case of visiting orchestras whose performance at RFH et al was relayed, the contract might have excluded further broadcasts. Also, I would assume that streaming would have been included in contracts only in, say, the last 10-15 years.

Apparently the Classical Century season is to include a 'Top 100 Classical Works of the Century' - a sort of Classic FM Hall of Fame for those with a somewhat longer attention span? The 'Top 100 Countdown' will be featured during Essential Classics.....
Unless there's a mispirnt [sic] in the BBC media release, nothing much happened musically between 1971 and the 1980s.
