I am very sorry to have to report the passing of Pauline Pickering who has been the Chairman (her preferred title!) of the Barbirolli Society since its' inception some 46 years ago. She died last Sunday after a fall.
All who knew her will not forget her personality and character and her passion for music. She went to over 500 Barbirolli concerts including concerts abroad, most memorably at the Berlin Philharmonic, where she saw an audience that adored JB. She once recounted a story about the aftermath of a performance of Symphonie Fantastique; the orchestra had left the stage after 10 minutes but it was half an hour before the audience would let JB go!
She dearly wanted to find and issue a performance of Handel's Messiah with Barbirolli and achieved that ambition recently, and was delighted to see the run of 500 CD's sell out! She will be sorely missed.
