    Glyndebourne picks Ticciati

Announcement today that Robin Ticciati has been appointed to succeed Jurowski as music director of the festival from 2014.

"The 28-year-old will take over from Vladimir Jurowski, who in 2001, aged 29, became the festival's youngest musical director."

But he won't be the youngest ever, because he'll be 31 by then
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think it is a shrewd move by the Glyndebourne team. Ticciati has proven himself on their books with the touring company and with the main house. The reaction of the LPO at last year's Prom (Hansel and Gretel) showed they are very keen on him. They will still have Jurowski available and now have three young and very able conductors (including Jakub Hrusa) who can be relied upon to maintain the high standards we have seen of late. Jurowski has needed to pull back on one of his commitments as he is in danger of spreading himself too thinly. So the move comes at the right time whilst keeping the directorship within the family. Young blood is good for cultivating younger audiences too.

Thought there would be more interest in this ...

Well ... it doesn't come to fruition until 2014 and I've got other things, like the Olympix in 2012 and a new Mayor of London, a new Government in 2015, my disability travel pass running out in 2015, to worry about.

        But in principle, I'm thrilled
