Popular works you never tire of

[Eine Alpensinfonie]

The Tallis Fantasia despite being played almost to death on CFM is a glorious work that I never tire of hearing.

For starters, mine include:

VW: The Wasps Overture; The Lark Ascending
Beethoven: nearly everything
Mozart: ditto
Handel: Messiah
Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet; Swan Lake; Sleeping Beauty (though I do tire of the Nutcracker Suite)

I tend to either like a work (in which case I don't tire of it) or I don't (in which case I either come to like it or never do). Popular works I've been tired of for as long as I've known them include R-K's Scheherazade, and Ravel's orchestration of Musorgsky's Pictures (the piano version of which I could delight in til the cows come home, have their tea and go to bed). Popular works I still like no matter how many times I've heard them include The Planets, Carmina Burana, the Polovtsian Dances (for which I still have to look up the spelling) etc etc.

... there are some 'popular' works - ie frequently played on Radio 3 - which I am always happy to hear, including Ferney's Polo-vest dances, Nights on Bald Mountains, and other Central Asian Steppes. Always happy to re-hear the Pachelbel canon, never wish to hear the Giazotto adagio. Never wish to hear again Eine Kleine or other Serenatas Notts; find it hard to hear again the 'Moonlight', and turn off if there's yet another rendition (rendition: if only the CIA were around when you really need 'em!) of the not-by-Bach not-for-organ -probably-shouldn't-be-in d-minor Toccata...
I am always happy to hear the Salut d'Amour / Chanson de Matin, and yes the Vaughan Wms Tallis, also the Walk to the Paradise Gardens.

Absolute embargo (PLEASE) on Rodeos and other HoeDowns...

I agree - but with these differences:

VW: everything except The Lark Ascending.
Beethoven: absolutley everything
Mozart: Nothing (though possibly the best bits of The Magic Flute)
Handel: Messiah
Tchaikovsky: Any of the ballets.

Bach: nearly everything, especially vocal or organ
Elgar: everything
Britten: everything, especially operas

Come to think of it, my application for a ticket for the Tate Tank's performance of Feldman's SQ2 having been unsuccessful, despite my having applied as soon as I received the invitation to apply, perhaps that work might fit the bill.

Though the sustained euphoria of the last movement does need commitment and stamina from the players (and listener?) if it is to come off.
I listen to either Lipatti or Argerich, or anybody who happens to be playing it on the radio.
