Oh! This is news to me...are the commonly played cadenzas in those two concertos not by Beethoven? (Two for the 4th, both described as 'astoundingly bad' by Tovey. But I like them.)


I'm rather fond of the cadenza in the Schumann concerto, as played by Lipatti!

Indeed - of the many recordings of both works I've heard, almost all use the Busoni ones. I have the music for them which I got years ago but that hasn't helped me to like them! I'd like to hear someone use Liszt's cadenza for the 3rd concerto or, being more awkard, Alkan's!

I'm pretty sure Brendel, Arrau, Gilels, Pollini and Schnabel use cadenzas by Beethoven. Can you give me an example of someone who uses the Busoni?

The recordings I have in my collection are by Murray Perahia with The Concertgebow Orchestra, conductor: Bernard Haitink and Vladimir Ashkenazy with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conductor: Sir Georg Solti. Bearing in mind it's been a long while since I've heard these, I am fairly certain that both these recordings use the Busoni cadenzas - leading me to come to the conclusion that I didn't like them!

Maybe not exactly 'on thread' but I've just acquired Beethoven's violin concerto (Kremer/Marriner, which uses Schnitke's cadenza. And - WOW! I just love it. Superbly skilled juxtoposition of Beethoven and 20th century.
