Is Mahler poking fun at the Merry Widow waltz in the last movement of the 7th symphony? The first four notes of the waltz are played twice, followed by two trills. It's as though the orchestra is laughing at it. Or perhaps he thought the waltz was fun and so provoking laughter. Or maybe it's none of that!
