Categorizing - Chopin, Debussy, Liszt and Ravel

Would it be right to consider these composers a "category"?

Should any of them be removed or any other composers added to make a category meaningful?

Is Alkan missing? And John Field - the Irish composer who influenced Chopin's piano techniques?

      I don't know.

That's why I have invited comment.

      Why would Alkan be included?

      Should Satie be there?

      Or Mompou?

Is it wrong to think of the four I have mentioned in the same light?

No. Each to his own. Including Alkan especially.

I'd be tempted to include Scriabin who was strongly influenced by Chopin. There are also similarities between Scriabin and Debussy's complex harmonies.

Can we divide it up then?

                Chopin and Liszt?

                Debussy and Ravel?

I would think Chopin elegant and even stately and Debussy artistically fluid.

I think Ravel and Debussy are in a class of there own, maybe on a pedestal of their own, Liszt and Chopin can only dream of being anywhere near them!

Should music be categorized? Although there has been talk of this elsewhere, a group I belong to on Facebook. As for the most part music can be categorized but when it gets to the romantic, that when it gets complicated.
