I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Matt Monro was a driver on the No 27 who sang From Russia With Love.

Basil Brush is an anthropomorphic fox who has duetted with Demis Roussos and Cilla Black and whose official songbook is as follows:

    Cockles and mussels
    Ding dong bell
    English country garden
    Food, food, glorious food
    Going to the zoo
    I taut I taw a puddy-tat
I'd like to teach the world to sing
    Lavender's blue
    The little white duck
Oh dear what can the matter be
    Polly wolly doodle
    Puff (the magic dragon)
    The old man
Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree
    When I'm sixty-four
Where and oh where has my little dog gone?
    Yellow submarine.

I would accept that these days there's a relative lack of diversity not only in commercial music but also in the "official" version of non-commercial music (Proms programming etc.), but from what I experience this doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of diversity in what people are actually doing.
      Were they mainly marketing strategies?

eg, I don't see how this could be anything other than "genre - calypso":

Lord Beginner accompanied by the Calypso Rhythm Kings with his song celebrating West Indies defeating England at Lord's in 1950. Writing credits go to Egbert...

Thank goodness for a post in this thread that I could understand!

Yes. Of course there were, are and always have been musics in different styles, but a style is something much more loosely defined. Marketing needs to have boxes to put things in so as to sell them most efficiently to the target market. Music itself is a lot less tidy than that. For example some of the material on the early Pink Floyd albums ("progressive/psychedelic rock") is very close to what some of the composers working in the GRM studios in Paris were doing at that time ("musique concrète") and of course many of the same people (like for example myself) would have been listening to both, and wondering what the whole "genre" thing was actually all about.

I know there are distinctions between those things but it is all the same sort of difference.

We are not, for example, in theremin territory.

What, in your opinion, are the leading five new or revived genres since 1981?

The equivalent to, say, rock, soul, reggae, country and folk?

Or rock n roll, modern jazz, rhythm and blues, electronica and punk?

(Tip - You could try for the massive movement that is new age (!!!) as it supposedly has its origins in the late 1980s but Tony Scott's "Music for Zen Meditation" was in 1964)

                        You assertions that

1: I would like to suggest that there were 10 times more new music genres in the 36 year period 1945-1981 than there were in the 36 year period 1981-2017.
2: I know there are distinctions between those things but it is all the same sort of difference.

                        are (IMV) wrong

The idea that there are "leading" genres in music doesn't seem to line up with what I see and hear.

Right - so it's Quiet Storm, Vapor Trap, Metropopolis, Crunk and Sertanejo Universitario.

I can't wait to find the relevant sections in HMV.

I was never going to win the Crown when it came to painting. That may be unpalletable, but it's the truth, and I've learned to live with it. Besides, Monet isn't everything.

But if genre is mostly a matter of marketing how do music educators establish a canon to transmit to the young idea?
